Arjen harmi tekee keksijän

Mikä yhdistää maastopyörän, Post-it-lapun, lenkkitossut, internetin ja energiapatukan? Niiden kehittäjillä menivät hermot. Tieteen keinoin voidaan selvittää, mitä keksitään seuraavaksi.

Pelastetaan maailma suunnitteluajattelulla

Suomessa hämmentävänkin tuntematon suunnitteluajattelu eli design thinking -keskustelu on raivonnut maailmalla jo hyvän aikaa.

So why would anyone want to be a researcher? To kick off the Skolar series of this spring, we’ll hear three responses, starting with Tua’s. Sorry for the Finnish language, which is due to the initial pilot phase being limited to increasing  communication between science and the general audience in Finnish:

Kehitystyössä on tärkeää keskittää voimat ideoiden jalostukseen ja toteutukseen, ei ideatehtailuun. Yrityksissä syntyy uutta, kun kehitys lomittuu kiinteäksi osaksi arkea.

Inspired by Design Factory: Students’ room at Helsinki French-Finnish School (HRSK)

As part of the We Learn-it EU project related to educational development, the Finnish French School of Munkkiniemi was one of three Schools part of the We Learn-Design course run through Aalto Design Factory.  The course was an intensive 3 week programme dealing with design thinking, product and service development, teamwork, communication, prototyping and presentation skills.  The theme or case study that was addressed by the participants was that of “Improving the High School experience”.

ME310 Paper robot challenge

Paperbot is one of the numerous challenges ME310 students take and maybe the funniest one: 1 week to build a robot while starting from scratch in electronics! The point of Paperbot is to get started with electronics and not being afraid of prototyping with them later on. Anyone can prototype basic electronics and Paperbot is the proof of it!

PDP & IDBM teams tackling water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) issues in schools

How can we make sure that new innovations are truly benefiting children? What is the point of great innovations if no one uses them in the end? Can we even call them innovations? These were few of the questions raised by PDP and IDBM students from Aalto who are working with Helsinki University and Makerere University from Uganda. The student teams started their first field work period in Northern Uganda in November 2014.

DFGN grows: IdeaSquare in CERN opened

Cooperation between Aalto University and the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN is taking a new form.  CERN has opened IdeaSquare, a new environment for technological development. The operating model of IdeaSquare is similar to that used by Aalto University in its Design Factory. Aalto University has assisted in the planning and implementation of the project.

Presenting ADF in Poland

Two ADFers, Martti and Clemens, were invited to Warsaw, Poland late November by the IdeAGORA project (http://www.ideagora.mazovia.edu.pl), which organized a seminar for knowledge transfer from Finland. They gave a presentation about Design Factory and the interdisciplinary project-based courses in Aalto University for the Business Center Club Poland (BCC) and the Polish chamber of commerce. The seminar organized by IdeAGORA presented developments in Finland around new experimental platforms, just like Design Factory, especially with the focus on company involvement.
