PRINTING
There are several ways to print in Design Factory. How and what you print will greatly define how and from which printer you should print. This page focuses on helping you install printers, contact the right people and in general cater to your printing needs.
Aalto Users
Aalto account owners. These users can print from their personal Aalto computers, a personal computer or mobile device and Aalto classroom computers.
Visitors
If you are a visitor and do not have an Aalto user account you can only print via VisitorPrinting system or from our Kiosk printing computer.
Others
If you are an Aalto student or staff and you need to print in large scale, as in posters please contact our PrintShop staff.
Printing for Aalto Users
If you have an Aalto account these instructions are for you
Secure Printing
In Aalto we have a private Cloud printing model in use. This means that a printing job can be sent to a single printing queue and then released from any Printing Point device. This way there is no accidental printing and there is no waist from forgetting to pick up your printing jobs.
When you send a print job to the SecurePrintPS print queue the job will be printed after you have identified yourself on the Printing Point device. The only Printing Point device in Design Factory is in the CopyRoom, next to the lobby.
In order to register yourself to the system see the Registration instruction page.
Print your jobs on both sides of the paper whenever you can, and use electronic materials to avoid unnecessary printing. Unprinted jobs will disappear from the print queue after 8 hours. A Printing Point device is a printer, so stapling or any other post-processing might not possible.
Printing quotas
- Students
- 200 pages per quarter of a year (black-and-white pages, size A4 or A3)
- Staff
- 500 pages per quarter of a year (black-and-white or colour pages, size A4 or A3)

Mobile Printing
If you would like to use your mobile device or your personal computer to print via Secure Print do as follows:
- Send an email to mobileprint@aalto.fi from your aalto.fi email account
- Attach the files (.pdf, .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .jpg, .txt, .ppt or .pptx.) that you want to print or just type in the text you want to print (Rich Text or HTML)
- You do not have to write anything in the message field, because any email message is also processed as a separate print job.
- Fetch your print form a Printing Point device
- In order to register yourself to the system see the Registration instruction page.
The maximum size of documents that can be printed is 50 MB. If there are several attachments, they are processed as separate print jobs. Print jobs are usually processed with in minutes. However large online traffic can extend this to 15 minutes, thus be patient.
Unprinted jobs will disappear from the queue after 8 hours. A Printing Point device is a printer, so stapling or any other post-processing is not possible.

Direct Printing
Unlike in Secure Printing mode where you have to release your print from the printer in Direct Printing mode your print is automatically printed from a device of your choice. All T21000 labeled printers in Design Factory support Direct Printing, with the exception of the small kiosk printer that is located in the CopyRoom.
If you would like to use Direct Print you need to add the printers to your Aalto computer manually. Instructions to do so are on this page. Unfortunately direct print is not supported from non Aalto computers.
We strongly recommend to use Secure Printing as that is more secure and minimises possible waste due to prints not being picked up from the right printer or picked up at all.
