DESCRIPTION

B116, The Sandbox, is a flexible space for light prototyping, experimental teaching, and hands-on workshops. It is designed for testing ideas, building quick mock-ups, and seeing what happens when good ideas meet cardboard, tape, and questionable first drafts.

The space seats approximately 50 people and can accommodate up to 100 people in total. It includes nine workshop benches, two large desks, 56 grey bar chairs, and four beige bar chairs. When no class is in session or about to begin, the space is available for informal making and collaboration.

A 98″ height-adjustable monitor is available for presentations and can be connected via HDMI. A speaker is installed beneath the monitor, although it is not currently connected. Microphones are not available.

Please reset the space after use and leave it ready for the next experimenter. Tools belong in The Sandbox and should not be removed unless necessary—and must be returned promptly.

SELF-SERVICE! All our spaces are self-service, which means you are responsible for setting up, cleaning, and resetting the space as instructed. Detailed instructions will be sent via email once your reservation is confirmed. You can also find reset instructions in most of our spaces. Thank you for your cooperation!

FAQ

Can we order catering?
Absolutely! We’re big fans of MAU-KAS. They’re familiar with our spaces, whip up delicious food, and deliver top-notch service. Click here to check out their offerings. And guess what? There’s a catering room right next to The Stage to make managing your munchies a breeze.

I am not Aalto Staff. I don’t have access to the building for my event. What to do?
No panic! We can hand you the keys to the kingdom. Just swing by the Viima building during working hours on weekdays to pick them up. Even better, inform us beforehand when picking up the keys, so we know to expect you. Remember to mention this little key exchange when you book the space.

I have guests coming in when the Viima building is closed. Can I leave the front door open?
Let’s keep it closed, shall we? Instead, why not appoint a friendly face to greet and let in your guests? You could also leave a contact number on the door—just anything but propping it open. We have a vigilant security guard who isn’t shy about shutting things down if needed. Let’s keep the party polite!

Can we serve alcohol?
Viima spaces are primarily intended for academic and study-related activities, including classes, meetings, workshops, studying, student association events, conferences, and other similar events. Aalto spaces have a general no alcohol policy, and based on this, we can’t offer our spaces for party purposes. However, exceptions may be possible when booking a space for events such as academic conferences or official dinners, where a toast may complement the nature of the event. Just a heads up: tipsy antics in university buildings are a no-go. If you are planning on offering alcohol at your event, let us know when filling out the form, and we can help you to estimate the proper adjustments and measurements, if needed.

Can we stream our event?
This space does not have equipment for that.

Can I connect external mixer audio source?
This space does not have equipment for that.

Can I get sound out from the room PA system?
This space does not have equipment for that.

What is the internet situation?
We’re wired and wireless! You can connect to Aalto Open, Eduroam, or Aalto networks.
