CUT & INK

Cut & Ink functions as an integral in-house design, print, and production studio located within the Aalto Design Factory. Our primary mission is to maintain, update, and create essential content for both the Aalto Design Factory and the Viima building. Our team possesses extensive expertise in print, digital, video, and photography production, supported by several decades of combined experience in both Aalto and freelance environments.

UTILIZING CUT & INK

Cut & Ink is not a dedicated printing service. Alongside our own work, we offer large-format inkjet printing and vinyl cutting to the Aalto community — as a contribution. There is no printing desk. Requests are handled by working designers, alongside everything else we do.

We support academic work, student projects, and design prototyping at small scale. If you are unsure whether your request fits, a good test is: is this a learning or making context, and is the quantity modest? If yes, send it. If you are planning a large print run for an event or a product launch, we are not the right place.

Inkjet printing: We print on 90g coated matte paper. Maximum width 890mm. We print at any size — you are not limited to ISO A formats. Send your file at the dimensions you actually want. Send a PDF at final print size — no margins, no bleeds, no trim marks, unless they are part of the design. The service is free. Allow 2–3 working days.

Vinyl cutting: Single-colour material only. Multicolour designs are not possible. Maximum cut width 560mm. Submit files in AI, SVG, or DXF with vector lines and outlined text. Working with the cutter requires clean vector files; if you are unsure about yours, ask before submitting. We have a limited selection of colours, all glossy — except black and white, which are also available in matte.

Submit by email using the email link below — it opens a ready-made template — it keeps things manageable on our end. We reserve the right to decline or delay depending on the nature of the request and our current capacity.

PRINTING FOR COURSES

Planning to send your students to print their course posters with us? Let’s talk first.

If you’re advising your students to print their course posters at CUT & INK, please get in touch with us before you do. This isn’t a formality; we need to agree on it together.

Most courses wrap up in the same few weeks, and we are not a commercial print shop. A sudden large batch of A1 posters in a compressed timeframe is something we may simply not be able to accommodate. If we can’t get everything printed in time, some students get their posters and some don’t. As a course organiser, that’s probably not how you want your students treated. Contact us early enough that we can plan together.
